Squad depth fully tested..

After two weeks inactive due to Pontllanfraith being unable to raise a team and the Wales v Scotland match, West travelled up and over the other valley to play top of the table Beaufort rfc in a friendly prior to the Wales v Australia match. With a number of players unavailable due to work or going to Cardiff to watch the international the West squad was going to be tested to the full, but despite the un-availabilities still travelled with a squad of 21. The game kicked off and both sides were looking to play positive rugby despite the weather conditions but it was West who were attacking with more directness and purpose. And then when the ball was turned over in their 22 West showed their intent with centre Dion Perry throwing a miss pass to release winger Ty, who then showed his blistering pace by racing 50m down field before most had broken into a sprint only to be upended by the fullback, but after some forward surges the ball was passed to the backs and flyhalf Robbie Baldock popping a short ball to captain Luke Royal who run passed or through five would be tacklers on a strong run before being brought down and Beaufort conceding a penalty at the break down.  If Beaufort thought that West were going to let the pressure drop, then they were well mistaken as West kicked to the corner for a lineout and after a lovely take by stand in 2nd row Cameron Evans (normally a wing) the drive was on, again stopped illegally by Beaufort, again West kicked for the corner and after some strong drives by the forwards, tighthead prop Jonny Coleman crashed over for his customary try, taking him to 100 points for the club. Beaufort restarted and again the two teams continued the arm wrestle up front with the front five of the evergreen DJ Winter, Ryan Clark, Jonny, Cameron and big Gary having a right battle in the scrums and the backrow of Scott Morris, Jamie James and Owain ‘Saheed’ Beard really putting in big shifts in the tight and loose and it was the latter pair who were involved in the next West try as some excellent interplay between forwards and backs saw winger Craig ‘Buff’ Buffin pass back inside to the impressive blindside flanker Jamie to burst onto the ball and unselfishly pass to openside Owain for him to score his first try for the club, converted by Robbie. Beaufort then finally got some pressure of their own in West’s 22 before scoring a converted try of their own, but again West hit back with the backs putting the ball through the hands to fullback Casey Roomus who with a delicate chip saw Ty sprint pass the defence to scoop the chipped ball up and return to Casey for him to cross for West’s third try, but again Beaufort hit back with a converted try to make the score 17-14 at halftime. West started the second half strongly again, trying to put the doggy Beaufort away, but with the forward battle continuing it wasn’t any easier for the home side with replacement flanker Patrick Daly and second row Connor Clarke putting in some big hits and making good yardage with ball in hand. With the pressure West were putting on Beaufort the penalty count and niggles started and from one resulting penalty the outstanding scrumhalf James ‘JR’ Reid took a quick tap sidestepped past three defenders before out pacing the next two to score West’s 4 try. West then made a few more changes with Paul Barry coming on to make his first team debut in the front row and winger Leam coming on to replace the injured Buff and both fitting straight in and keeping the team cohesion going, the game continued to be the arm wrestle it had been with both sides attacking and defending well with no quarter given or taken but after a number of penalties in the dying minutes the referee awarded the home side a penalty try to give the final scoreline of 22-21 a little flattering look to Beaufort. All in all a pleasing win with the squad depth fully tested against a strong Beaufort team featuring a few guest players..
