West Mon 36pts Malpas 12

The last home game of 2018 saw West Mon complete the double over committed opponents with a convincing second half performance that left the crowd and indeed the coaches purring with delight.

We expected a hard battle against Malpas and were not disappointed as the visitors started in fine style with a corner try after just 5 minutes of play.

West Mon responded well with some fine forward play which resulted in  tries for Connor Whitcombe and the bulldozing Scott Morris.

At this point West Mon was threatening to run away with the game as they dominated the line outs through Luke Shelton (who was playing his 50th game for the club) whilst wing Jason Morgan came close on more than one occasion.

However a lack of discipline at crucial times saw several opportunities go begging and this was compounded when a rare foray into home territory saw Malpas cross for a converted try which left West Mon on the wrong side of a 12-10 half time score line.

Some harsh words at the break saw West Mon start in impressive fashion with the probing of scrum half James Read and tactical kicking of Robbie Baldock putting the visitors under all sorts of pressure from the start of the half.

The home side was also dominating the scrums with Jonny  Coleman, Ryan Clark and Duane Gardner impressive throughout.  The pressure soon told and resulted in a very satisfying penalty try being awarded after a five yard scrummage was illegally halted by a desperate defence.

This was soon followed by arguably the two best tries of the season, the first of which came from Craig Buffin after a scintillating 60 yard run by captain Luke Royal.

From the restart backs and forwards combined in a sweeping 70 yard movement which resulted in some outstanding play by flanker Jamie James before Robby Taylor released Casey Roomus who ran some 35 yards to score  again.  Casey adding the two conversions for good measure.

Whilst a beaten side, Malpas had not thrown in the towel and were only thwarted in their attempts to reduce the score line by some excellent defence, in which Dion Perry was outstanding as was sub Jordan Clark on his debut.

The final score ironically came from a period of pressure by the visitors, when a loose ball was seized on by winger Owen Beard, who hacked the ball over half the length of the field for Casey Roomus to cross for his second try of the game.

This completed a very encouraging all round performance by West Mon which was the team's eighth win out of eleven games played in 2018 at the Stad de Skew.
