Trefil 26pts West Mon 14

West Mon made the long trek to play Trefil in a National 3 East C encounter, with a squad showing 11 changes from the last game due to injuries and work commitments.  After the ascent from base camp to the pitch (possibly the highest in Wales), the game kicked off with West at sixes and sevens while trying to gel together with so many changes.

Trefil took full advantage scoring 26 unanswered points in the first 30 minutes with many supporters thinking a landslide victory was on the cards. But then the visitors got their act together and started to show the attack and physical defence that has been their forte this season.

With the front five of Craig Weaver, Ryan Clack (making his 50 appearance for the club), D J Winter (who has made a few more than 50), Dafydd Thomas and Deri Simons putting in a shift up front and the backrow of Richard Prosser, Owain Beard and Gareth Moorcraft everywhere, the pack finally started to get some momentum.

With half backs Jon Wells and Craig ‘Buff’ Buffin directing play Trefil then found themselves under pressure finally. West started to search for the score that the Trefil defence had so far kept at bay and it came when West were given a scrum just inside Trefil’s 22, the ball was released and centre Gavin ‘Troll’ Trollope (playing his 1st game in over a season and half due to injury) put his fellow centre Alex Willcox in space and with his pace there was only going to be one outcome with a try under the posts converted by Buff to go into half time losing 26-7.

Some changes at half time to keep everyone fresh in the heat saw replacement props Scotty Leonard and Matt James enter the fray.  West carried on were they had left off at the end of the first half with wingers Jason Morgan and Rhys ‘Cozzie’ Coslett  keeping their flanks secure and fullback and captain for the day Dion Perry (making his 100 appearance for the club) fielding every kick aimed at him as well as making a try saving tackle and jackal.

West continued to battle away at the Trefil defence which was also very good and finally broke it down again when another pre-determined backs move saw  Alex Willcox  pass back inside to Buff for him to score under the posts, converting himself.

With  chance of a losing bonus point the visitors upped  their efforts and came close after a powerful burst by replacement centre Alex Maddocks  and some strong running by the forwards  and backs.

A mention also for Adam Rawlings and Mike Matthews on making their 1st team debuts.
