West Mon 49 Trefil 14

For the last home game of the season West Mon welcomed Trefil with a stronger squad than had lost just 3 weeks earlier to the same opponent.

From the kicked off, West were straight on the attack with the forwards making hard yards and the backs using the space of our home pitch to really stretch the away team.

With this pressure the first try soon arrived with captain Robbie Baldock releasing rampaging No 8 Bobby Cundick to burst through 2 tacklers and the 3rd deciding not to bother as he went over for the opening try, converted by Robbie.

At this point West were in total control keeping Trefil pinned in their own half, with any attacks stopped in their tracks by solid fullback Dion Perry and his 2 wingers Jason Morgan and Owain Beard (normally a flanker).
However a silly mistakes allowed Trefil to level the score with a converted try of their own, but West hit straight back again with plenty of hard yards by props Scotty Leonard, DJ Winter and backrow Craig Jenkins. When the ball was released to the backs,  centre Alex Willcox ran through a gap and side stepped the last 2 defenders to  score his 1st of the game, converted by Robbie.
But again a costly mistake allowed Trefil a converted try, so after some words under the posts West started to up the tempo and get back to the game plan.
With the abrasive hooker Beppe James and 2nd row Dafydd Thomas in the thick of things and with Luke Shelton and Dan ‘Dukey’ Gibbings again dominating the lineout, Trefil  struggled to find any cohesion and after another series of surges  and quick recycling, the ball came out to barnstorming centre Alex Maddocks who run through or passed at least 5 players to score his 1st try for the club, converted by Robbie and to give West a 21-14 half time lead.
The second half commenced with Trefil desperately trying to get back on level terms with some attacks of their own, but West’s defence held firm.
Then a turnover in West’s 22 and breakout saw the forwards and backs interlinking, with some lovely offloads to release Dukey for his well deserved try and West’s bonus point, converted by Robbie to take his season tally to over 100pts.
West’s tails were now up and feeling a little less pressured, and following some strong running by  replacements Craig Weaver, Richard Prosser and Ryan Clark, the ball reached Alex Willcox who accelerated passed tiring defenders to score his 2nd try and 10th try of the season, converted by Robbie.
Trefil re-started hoping to try to get back into the game, but the West defence was just too solid and physical for them and with West turning defence into attack they were back on the front foot surging into Trefil’s half before a nice offload allowed Alex Maddocks to run in for his 2nd try converted by Robbie.

Trefil was now chasing shadows and with a nice breakout from West’s 22,  a delightful show and go saw Billy Whizz Alex Willcox, outpace the defence to score in the corner for his hatrick and with Robbie’s successful touchline conversion, the icing was firmly put on the cake.

Seven tries and a first ever win over Trefil was not a bad way to finish in what was our 7th home victory with just 2 league defeats all season at the Stad de Skew.,
