Girlings 18 West Mon 26

It has been a long time coming, some 35 years in fact since our last win against Girlings, and full credit to the class of 2016 for this hard fought but deserved victory.

For once every one did the homework as prescribed and heeded the pre match lectures of head teachers Dale Perry and Dean Jones.

That late to bed on a school night advice did wonders for an exceptional back row of Connor Whitcombe and Daniel Gittings, whilst Dai Preece's captaincy and form was text book.

After the school register was taken the game started at an electric pace with an early penalty for the home side being soon overtaken after that well know truant Luke David created space for a try for Gavin Wheatstone who put in another top marks performance.

However this was soon cancelled out by Girlings who scored 2 good tries to lead the visitors by 15pts to 3 with 10 minutes to go before lunch time and who looked at this stage to be heading for another A * win.

However it was at this part of the curriculum that West Mon started to take their game to a higher grade.  Whilst under pressure in the scrums, the visitors were out standing in the loose and in this aspect no one deserves higher marks than Jonny Coleman and Joe Watkins, the latter  who performed as if he had previously been expelled from a certain Cwmbran school.

With this pressure came territory which eventually translated into 2 penalties through the trusty boot of head prefect  Luke Royal to leave us trailing by 4 points as we all went to lunch.

It was at this point that a few strange things happened.  Firstly Gav's father came on to the play ground with a packed lunch for his son.  (must share around Tony, his fellow classmates get jealous)

Secondly Mrs Jackie Gardner, who had watched the first half on the Girlings side of the field on the pretext of attending a parents evening with free coffee, came over to the West Mon touchline having stolen the secrets of the home side's syllabus.

And thirdly was the fact that the homeside committed a school boy error (in my humble opinion) by deciding to reshuffle their scrum formation, an area we went on to gain top marks in the second half through the efforts of that ever so mature student Duane Gardener and 1st former Craig Weaver.

As a result we scored 2 terrific second half tries through Oxford Blue winger Alex Willcox who has pace to match his IQ, following slick work by his fellow University Graduate Craig Buffin. The second was from Ryan Clark who must be the oldest looking 6th former in the whole education system.

The last 20 minutes was an examination which we passed with flying colours with head teacher's pet Dion Perry cool under pressure with Robbie Baldock expelling anything that came down the middle whilst Bobby Cundick playing in his latest playground position, bullied his opposite number all afternoon.

.This was a huge class effort and the last 10 minutes saw the visitors introduce several substitutes from the naughty step, who all played their part

The school bell finally rang to end a pulsating afternoon of rugby.  Well done lads, the school governors were well pleased with that performance.
