No doubt with one eye on Thursday's cup final West Mon took a much changed team to Tredegar and were made to fight all the way before securing the season's double over their opponents whose performance belied their lowly league position
Indeed it was only in the last minute of the 80 that the visitors made sure of victory when an interception saw left wing Conor Price run fully 80 metres to out pace a wilting defence and score under the posts and secure the bonus point victory for his side.
First half tries came from the all action Patrick Daly, whilst the ever popular D J Winter scored his first try of the season after a trademark charge after good wotk by Chubba Lucas.
The second half was similar to the first with both sides having their moments before Ryan Clark burrowed his way over the line for a score which threatened to make the game safe for the visitors.
However the home side replied in kind and with 10 minutes to go the match could have gone either way. Indeed there was a need for some heroic defence by the visitors in which outside half Gavin Trollope was outstanding as was Alex Maddocks who showed another side to his game by collecting 12 points with the boot.
Chewy Baldwin was a very competent full back whilst second row Ieuan Taylor was prominent with ball in hand
Considering the number of changes, captain for the day Alex Willcox was well pleased with this victory, which completed the club's league programme and takes us to the dizzy heights of 4th in the table (although other fixtures to be played may affect the final positions), which represents an amazing turn around from last season.
Thoughts now move to the final game of the season on Thursday when West Mon plays old friends Abersychan in the final of the Reg Buttress Shield, attempting to win silverware for the first time in its 69 year history. Win or lose it promises to be a great night
