West Mon 54 St Josephs Casnewydd 7

West Mon continued its build up to the new season with an encouraging performance against  a side that is re-entering the national league system after an absence of several years. The visitors were dogged performers and did enough to suggest that they will be competitive in their division.

If the previous week's 21-6 win against Whitchurch was somewhat underwhelming and marred by the broken leg suffered by scrum half John Wells, this week's game saw the hard work of the coaching team really start to pay dividends.

Despite the absence of several regulars, the home side still assembled a large squad of players who all took part in the game showing that competition for starting places will be keen.

Whilst the scoreline was pleasing, equally satisfying was the manner of the performance with backs and forwards adapting well to a more expansive style of rugby and which resulted in eight excellent tries being scored at regular intervals.

Three of these came from pacy left wing Alex Whilcox who took full advantage of the deft hands shown by his inside runners whilst Casey Roomus showed what a good signing he will be with a brace of tries.

Other scores came from Chubba Lucas and Gavin Trollope whilst Jonny Coleman once again found his way to the scoreline after a trademark charge.  Outside half Robbie Baldock kicked 7 conversions.

With no more friendlies scheduled, West Mon will complete their build up to the 18/19 season on the training field, with sessions taking place at 7pm every Tuesday and Thursday at the pilcs club.  Newcomers will be most welcome.
